Curious Facts / Nature

Is a camel’s hump a water tank?

Before picturing a desert journey, look at what is stored in the hump.

A changing hump can reflect food supply

A hump does not always stand upright at the same size. When food is scarce, using stored fat can make the hump shrink or lean to one side.

Thinking of this as a water tank emptying misses its role. The fat is an energy source the camel can use when it cannot obtain enough food.

Distinguish stored water from stored energy

A camel’s hump stores fat; it does not function as a tank of drinking water. A desert setting may suggest water storage, but the hump has a different role.

That does not mean camels need no water. Look beyond the outline of the hump and consider what the body stores and when it uses that reserve.

How the stored reserve is used

A simplified relationship when food is scarce, not a way to calculate energy or survival time from hump size.

  1. Fat is stored

Fat in the hump provides an energy reserve.

  2. The reserve is used

Using fat when food is scarce can change the hump’s size or shape.

Sources and scope

Scope of this fact
  • This explains the role of stored hump fat; it does not mean camels need no water.
  • Hump shape alone is not used to assess an individual’s health or thirst.
