Curious Facts / Everyday Life
Does a barcode contain the price?
Follow the link between a product number and the price shown at checkout.
Read the pattern, then find the product
Bar widths and the spaces between them carry machine-readable information. Beneath a typical EAN or UPC product barcode, the digits show the same product identifier for people to read.
Looking up that identifier in the store’s database can retrieve a product’s name and selling price. The number is a lookup key, rather than a complete price label.
Does the rule cover every barcode?
Special systems for variable-measure goods or coupons can include a price or monetary value. Saying that no barcode ever contains a price would therefore be misleading.
First distinguish the barcode type and the information it is designed to carry. This reading focuses on common EAN and UPC barcodes on packaged goods.
How information connects at checkout
A conceptual product lookup, not a processing specification for every barcode or store.
- Scan
Read the identifier from bars and spaces.
- Look up
Find the store’s information linked to that identifier.
- Display
Retrieve the product name and selling price.

Sources and scope
- GS1 — Are the description and price of the item included in the barcode?
Main answer: item identity, database lookup, and variable-measure/coupon exceptions
- GS1 — How do GS1 GTINs and barcodes work?
Opening explanation: machine-readable GTIN and the number below the bars
- GS1 — What is a barcode?
Main definition: bars and spaces; one-dimensional symbols and additional-data formats
Scope of this fact
- This focuses on common EAN/UPC barcodes on packaged goods. Encoded data varies by barcode type and store system.
- The flow is conceptual. It does not reproduce a scannable barcode, valid product number or a particular store’s implementation.
